Parent Orientation
Each year, prior to the start of Recruit Training, the Lt. Alexander Bonnyman Unit holds an orientation briefing so parents and potential recruits can learn about the Young Marines. During the briefing, unit Adult Leaders and Young Marines talk about the program’s core values, Young Marine grooming and conduct standards, physical fitness requirements, and handling of medications. They explain what will go on during the Recruit Training, when it will take place, and how much it will cost. They describe the importance to the program of the Drug Demand Reduction activities they will participate in. Then, they tell about what to expect once the recruits graduate to become Young Marines. They describe past community service activities and unit trips to places like Washington, DC and Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC. They describe the summer training opportunities available through the national Summer Program of Adventures, Challenges, Encampments, and Schools (SPACES). They explain the opportunity the Young Marines have to earn promotions and take on increasingly responsible positions within the unit as well as the opportunity the Young Marines have to earn ribbons for achievements both within the program and for outside activities. Finally, they tell the parents and potential recruits how the program will help every participant become a better citizen leading a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
The Orientation briefing generally takes place each year in February before the Recruit Training begins in early March.
